I have always thought of Christmas time, when it has come round, as a good time; a kind, forgiving, charitable time; the only time I know of, in the long calendar of the year, when men and women seem by one consent to open their shut-up hearts freely, and to think of people below them as if they really were fellow passengers to the grave, and not another race of creatures bound on other journeys. ~Charles Dicken
Tis the season to be jolly and giving! These are the times to think of those less fortunate than us we can give back. For the past two years my family and I have taken the time to go through town and give to the homeless. Giving to those in need has really left a mark in my spirit that I will always carry. The very first year we decided to do this my family and I were very hesitant. We didn't how to go approach them, or what to tell them. After a several minutes of hesitating and planning what we were going to tell them. We finally packed up some blankets, several toy that my brother and sister wouldn't use, some pillows, canned food and some cooked food as well as some gallons of water. As we drove up to the bridge (almost all homeless people in my hometown gathered under the bridge) we noticed several people gathered closely together like a little huttle. My family and I got off the car and walked towards them and realized that what they were actually doing was hutling together to keep warm. We then gave them everything we had packed in the truck the blankets, pillows, food etc. While we were giving them these things this little girl about 6 or 7 came up to and said "Thank you for giving my family something to eat, we don't have to worry about someone dying" When I heard that little girl say that to me my heart sank to my stomach and tears filled my eyes with sadness and joy. Sadness because of what that family was going through but joy to know that I was able to help them with some food and warmth. That Christmas I was able to give a gift that changed someones life for the better. Holiday's are not just about the reuniting and having a good time, or eating until we can't eat no more. The holiday's are also a time where we can take the time to reminisce and be grateful for we have and give back to those who are in need. I encourage you to give back these holiday's. Go around your community and give back to elderly, the homeless, the young children, etc. You can visit the elderly at nursing homes, take food, blankets, clothing to the homeless, make a play or Christmas carol with the children, anything counts. I promise that it will make a great difference in someones life and the feeling you will get will be something explainable and fulfilling. So give back these holidays and remember that can be you one day!
