Christmas is a time for giving, bringing joy and be concern about others. In almost all over the world, Christmas is the biggest event of the year. Christmas is a day of merry-making. The families clean their houses and decorate it with lights, candles and banners etc. They all wait to finally see their relatives that bring presents and food. But we never stop to think about those less fortunate, especially children who in my opinion should never be sad. We decided that for this project we would choose to support an orphanage. These children deserve at least for one day to forget their problems and feel someone cares for them. Since Christmas break is coming my teammates and I decided to help an orphanage from our home. Casa Nazareth is an orphanage founded in 1947, and is specialized in kids who have been neglected, abused by their parents or being found living in the street. The church from our community is responsible for its direction. Pastor Antonio Hernandez the President of this organization.
Casa Nazareth does not receive any state or federal funding. All funding received is from individuals, families, corporations, businesses, foundations and church. Pastor Antonio let us come and spend our day with the kids; most of them range between 1 to 14 years of age. Since the kitchen facilities of Casa Nazareth is not equipped to handle a massive cooking that would allow the children to participate, he recommended us to spend some time with the kids by baking a simple cookie recipe. The cookies baked will be given the next day as a way of showing their gratitude in the “Arbol de la Esperanza” event.
This event is organized every year by the community church. For a whole day radio stations people in streets, supermarkets and the Casa Nazareth, collect toy gifts for the children to have in Christmas. After, every kid has one present, the rest are send to low-income families with children. This event will take place on December 22, 2012. We will be helping baking the cookies the day before the event on Friday 21, 2012. We suggested the Pastor that we would like to involve the kids in the activity and that we would provide the ingredients for the recipe.
Baking by age:
Since not all the kids can do the same tasks we need to ensure that the baking responsibilities are suited to the age of the child. So we will divide them in groups:
1-3: simple baking activities, like pouring, stirring and decorating.
5-6: more advanced activities, like measuring, using the rolling pin, and using piping icing.
9-14: read and instruct from the recipe, use electric beaters and the microwave oven.
After this we will continue with the process of baking. You can find our recipe and more in allrecipes.com
